Calcium pyruvate - Does Calcium Pyruvate work? Any side effects?
Calcium pyruvate is formed in the body during digestion
of carbohydrates and protein from food. Found in the form of pyruvic acid,
pyruvate can be found in various foods including red apples, cheese and red
wine. Claims that calcium pyruvate improves metabolism,

Calcium pyruvate and exercise training
Effects of calcium pyruvate supplementation during training on body composition,
exercise capacity, and metabolic responses to exercise.
Nutrition. 2005 Mar;21(3):312-9. Koh-Banerjee PK, Ferreira MP, Greenwood M,
Bowden RG, Cowan PN, Almada AL, Kreider RB. Department of Preventive Medicine,
University of Tennessee Medical School, Memphis, Tennessee, USA.
We evaluated the effects of calcium pyruvate supplementation during training
on body composition and metabolic responses to exercise. Twenty-three
untrained females took either 5 g of calcium pyruvate or a placebo (PL) twice
daily for 30 d while participating in a supervised exercise program. No
significant differences were observed between groups in energy intake or
training volume. Results indicate that calcium pyruvate supplementation during
training does not significantly affect body composition or exercise performance
and may negatively affect some blood lipid levels. No significant calcium
pyruvate side effects were reported.
